The Creative Arts Initiative is a new program that will connect business members with the local creative arts community. It will help support business growth and the local economy, provide living wages to local artists, increase beautification efforts, and help to grow a thriving arts district and artisan community in Durango. This initiative builds on the strong foundation of the creative arts district that the City of Durango has highlighted already and increases the multiplier effect by working with independent local businesses, keeping money in our community.
Our First Project: “Local is the Way!” Mural at Durango Joe’s College Location
Mockup of “Local is the Way” mural, soon to be designed and installed at Durango Joe’s.
Local First is working with the creative arts and business community to design and install a mural on the Durango Joe’s College Drive location. Through creative expression and engagement with our local, independent business community, we hope to educate the public about the importance of building a strong, local economy while celebrating artistic expression in a manner that explores the history and uniqueness of Durango and La Plata County.
The theme of the new mural is “Local is the Way!” and aims to promote buying local, eating local, and being local right in the heart of downtown. This building is the gateway to downtown from Fort Lewis College and will be an exceptional opportunity to educate our community and visitors about our community’s support of the local economy as they enter Durango’s unique downtown district.
