For the Birds: Supporting Durango’s Feathered Friends, One Seed at a Time

At Local First, we love celebrating the independent businesses that make Durango unique, and For the Birds is a perfect example. For 29 years, this locally owned business has helped bird lovers connect with the natural world through high-quality seed blends and expert guidance.

Whether you’re a seasoned birder or just beginning to enjoy the simple pleasure of backyard birdwatching, For the Birds Southwest Blend seed makes it easy to enjoy our feathered friends year-round. You can find Southwest Blend conveniently stocked at Kroegers Ace Hardware in Downtown Durango.

We caught up with owner Kristi Streiffert, whose passion and deep knowledge of local birdlife have helped shape For the Birds into a successful business and community resource. Read on to learn more about her story—and don’t miss the chance to meet her in person at the Durango Farmers Market this season!

Q&A with Kristi Streiffert

What inspired you to take over For the Birds?

I have a business background and a birding/bird-feeding background, and what an opportunity to combine them!

What’s your favorite part of selling a birdseed blend that caters to local birds?

I hear from excited customers who have greatly enhanced their experience of nature for many years using our special blend.

What advice would you give to someone who’s just starting to watch birds?

Go on bird walks with the Durango Bird Club. Here is a website if you Google it!

Are there any birds unique to the Durango area that bird lovers should watch out for?

If you check ebird.org for La Plata County, you’ll be shocked at how many species we have here – and hands down, Durango’s favorite bird is the Evening Grosbeak.

What makes your products different from what people might find at a national chain store?

Our proprietary blend for wild bird feeding is a special regional mix that has earned a loyal following from Durango’s birds for nearly 30 years. This is premium seed, mixed fresh. It draws a delightful variety of chickadees, nuthatches, goldfinches, pine siskins, grosbeaks, juncos, and many others. The best part is it’s no waste – no inedible fillers like wheat, gravel, or milo – so even though it looks more expensive, it is actually not.

How has being part of the Local First community helped or shaped your business?

The Local First Coupon Book has been the most important way I’ve kept Southwest Blend in the awareness of our customers.
