July 1 – 7, 2017

In conjunction with celebrating our nation’s independence, our community celebrates our local, independent businesses with the declaration of “Independents Week.” Local First helps lead the charge of this nationwide movement to recognize the importance of community, entrepreneurism, economic democracy and community self-determination.

Why Independent

Businesses

Matter

  • Keeps Decision Making Local
Independent businesses can make decisions by people that live in La Plata County, not by a larger chain elsewhere
  • Builds Community Well Being
Local businesses build strong, resilient communities and contribute to local causes
  • Keeps Dollars Local
More money stays in the local economy and creates jobs right in La Plata County
  • Encourages Character and Prosperity
Unique businesses preserve the character of our town, preventing it from looking like Anywhere, USA!

La Plata Passport Challenge!

During Independents Week we encouraged people to shop local with our La Plata Passport Challenge, where 5 stamps from spending $5 at local independent businesses entered you to win $200 cash prize.

This year’s winner was Nora Stafford, a resident of La Plata County for 36 years. Nora is a retired school teacher who now spends her time working at the Welcome Center, helping with The Garden Project of Southwest Colorado, and paddle boarding on the Animas River.

When asked why she buys local, Nora said “Sometimes it can seem easier to buy online, but it’s our local businesses that donate to the causes that we care and work on. Businesses such as Maria’s, Zia’s, and Carver’s are so much more than just businesses, they care about our home. My job at the welcome center is to help tell tourists where to shop, so it’s important that I do it myself!”

Nora plans on using her money on her favorite activity, paddleboarding. Congrats Nora and thank you to everyone who shopped local!

Decal and Declaration of Independents

This year we asked for the Mayor to officially dedicate July 1st through 7th Independents Week by signing our “Declaration of Independents”. We then invited the citizens of La Plata County to also sign the declaration, showing their support for local, independent businesses!

Look for the Independents Week decals outside of participating businesses to know where to shop!
